What is the HP 614 all about? First off the hardware. The phone is all plastic. but overall feels solid. No luxury here. The keyboard has a raised feel but the buttons feel a little too close together. I had to use my nail to press buttons on occasion.

The overall size of the phone is slightly larger then I expected. About the same width as a Blackberry curve and a bit longer. Just shy of being odd to hold and talk on. The thickness factor is not bad and could slip into a pocket without too much hassle.

I have mixed feelings about this phone. I mean where was HP heading towards with this design. First off, its running Windows Mobile Professional. So, it has a touch screen, a pen and a weird keyboard. So, you have choices, but sometimes too many choices ruins a good smart phone. HP and Microsoft take a note here and remember Palm. There are better hardware designs out there running Windows Mobile Professional that have a real qwerty keyboard.

The keyboard, while somewhat decent, is hard to work with if you choose not to operate the phone with the pen and your finger. I guess I really don’t like Windows Mobile Professinal on this device. They should have run with Windows Mobile Standard, and reworked the keyboard. Since this does not have a qwerty keyboard there is an implementation of XT9 with word suggestion as you type. Not bad, but it take time to work with.

The HP 614 is feature rich, but the choice of Windows Mobile Professional and an awkward keyboard make for a poor smart phone.

The final verdict. If you love Windows Mobile Professional and your looking for a all in one device that has a non qwerty keyboard, then the HP 614 is for you.
